"Sandalphon" is an Abdul led track that saw it's genesis in the form of an ensemble originally conceived as a Portishead cover band of sorts. The practices metamorphosed into being heavily influenced by Portishead rather than covering the songs. In the beautiful spirit of improv the bass player for the show had to drop out so Kevin Knight who was originally on drums, switched to bass and Abdul asked me to fill in two days prior without ever having rehearsed with the participants. Not only had I not rehearsed with them I literally met them 5 minutes before we were set to go on. Some type of magic then happened as we all played off each other brilliantly and to this day this is one of my favorite shows ever. So happy we got the chance to approach this magic again in the studio.
